Integrity Now Insurance Brokers recently had this little list on their website. It reminded me of how we want integrity and accountability in every area of our life. But we somehow want a pass when it comes of matters of eternal significance. Like membership in a covenant faith community that specifically stands for something so they do not fall for anything.
1. Without church membership, there is no accountability
Not requiring church membership can impact the leadership and the church members. Without official membership, it is difficult to track people and hold them accountable for their actions. Additionally, if someone does something legally wrong within the church, they can easily slip away and remain anonymous.
2. There is no unity without church membership.
Without the accountability of membership, there is a greater risk of spiritual apathy, disunity among members, and a lack of vision for the church. Additionally, church members can become disconnected from one another, creating isolation and loneliness. Without membership, there is a lack of stability, proper governance and oversight.
3. Without church membership guidelines there are no established expectations.
Without the legal and spiritual responsibility that comes with church membership, there can be a lack of mutual commitment from members of a church to one another. This can lead to a lack of spiritual growth and stability. Without the connection of being a part of an established body of believers, individuals are less likely to receive the spiritual guidance, support, and accountability needed in order to grow in their faith. Without members, churches may have difficulty meeting their budget to fund ministries and church life.
4. Without church membership requirements outside individuals may vote on changes that could affect the church negatively.
Without a formal membership process, the ability of individuals to have a say in changes could affect the church negatively. Without church membership, any individual can come and go as they please and cause disruptions to the mission of the church organization.
Outside members could put to vote recommendations that go against a place of worship’s long-held religious doctrine such as baptism, communion, theology allowed to be taught in sermons, and other matters of significance.
5. Without church membership, there is no way to exercise oversight.
Not requiring church membership can have a significant effect on church oversight. Without formal membership, there is no clear way to define which people can be considered part of the church or who is eligible to participate in decisions and issues related to church governance. This can lead to confusion and disputes among members, as well as a lack of accountability, which can diminish the effectiveness of church witness, discipline and other practices.

9-10 So let’s not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good. At the right time we will harvest a good crop if we don’t give up, or quit. Right now, therefore, every time we get the chance, let us work for the benefit of all, starting with the people closest to us in the community of faith. Galatians 6 The Message
